are also used for fiber.  The leaves forming the closed central spike are put in boiling water till they wilt & then they are cleaned as the ixtle fibre.  The yucca fiber is finer & less strong than that of the ixtle & is worth less in the N.Y. market so it is little exploited.

The pulque agave fiber is also taken out.  It produces a very fine strong fiber used for making shoemakers thread & for fine strong cords but is worth 12ยข a lb, owing to the small yield & trouble in getting it.

Pack saddle covers, bags, sacks, 
rope, matas & etc are made 
of ixtle & yucca fiber.
