STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
DISTRICT OF CHARLESTON.
Maj. Genl R. Saxton, Asst Commissioner of Bureau of Refugees Freedmen & Abandoned Lands

PERSONALLY appeared before the undersigned, a Notary Public in and for the said District and State, or authorized to administer Oaths for civil purposes, Eugene H. McElhenny and State aforesaid, who being duly sworn, on his oath say that he is the owner of a plantation situated on Johns Island with Parish of St John's Colleton in the State aforesaid containing eight hundred & twenty (820) acres more or less, known as "Woodlands"

That this applicant was in possession of said property by occupation or possession [[strikethrough]] or by a tenant, [[/strikethrough]] up to the day of January A.D. 1865 [[1862]] when the inhabitants of the said Island were ordered to remove their negroes & effects by the military authorities of the so called Confederate states

That on or about the day_______ of A.D. 186 , the United States Military Forces took possession of the said property, and that the Bureau of Refugees Freedmen & Abandoned Lands now holds the same. 

That on the day of A.D. 1865, this applicant took the Amnesty Oath as prescribed by the Proclamation of the President of the United States, issued the 24th of May, 1865, a certified copy of which is hereunto annexed.

That this applicant does not come under any of the exceptions named in said Proclamation, [[strikethrough]] as he was never voluntarily in the military service of the so called Confederate States, or if in such service that he [[/strikethrough]] as he never held any military rank in such service above that of Private and that his taxable property, over and above his liabilities, does not exceed $20,000. 

This application is made to the [[strikethrough]] Honorable Secretary of the Treasury [[/strikethrough]] Asst Commis of said Bureau for the return of said property, [[strikethrough]] and a just award for the use and occupation by the United States during said term, as per such rents and profits as have been received by said Treasury Agents [[/strikethrough]]

Henry Seabrook is hereby authorized to act as the Attorney of this applicant in presenting this petition.
