Circular Head Quarters Secessionville James Island May 19th, 1862 In accordance with authority from General Head Quarters persons having the ownership or charge of slaves on James Island will forthwith make preparations for the removal of such slaves beyond the limits of this command at an early day. The proper defense of this Island renders this necessary. If desired one male and one female slave may remain in charge of each settled plantation. Permits for them must be taken out from this office, and they must be in readiness to move at a moments notice. Beef cattle and sheep must not be removed from the Island they being required for the use of the military. Owners of these or persons having them in charge will furnish these Head Quarters with their numbers, locality and marks or brands, such as are taken by the Government will be paid for by the Commissary. Forage not wanted by its owners will be taken, valued and paid for by the Quarter Master. All Boats and flats must be taken to Charleston or to some point in the near of the lines on this Island before day next. By order Brig. Gen. Dist Carlos Nacy A.D.C
