PLANNED AIRPORT MAIL FACILITY PROJECTS

Atlanta

Postal planning at the Atlanta Airport is being coordinated with the City of Atlanta's Department of Aviation, which is currently preparing an airport layout plan. Acquisition of additional land has permitted the city to plan significant airport expansion. Preliminary studies indicate that the present airport mail building of 16,000 square feet of workroom space will need to be doubled. The present mail facility was constructed in 1960.

Baltimore

The Post Office Department is arranging to acquire additional space at Friendship Airport, as the volume of first class mail dispatched and received has increased approximately 100 per cent in the past several months. New construction may be necessary to provide the approximate 6,000 square feet desired.

Boston

A space survey is being conducted this week by the Boston Inspection Division to determine building size requirements at Logan International Airport, Boston, for a new airport mail facility. Present quarters in a cargo building have been outgrown and inadequate access by both air carriers and motor vehicle hampers efficient mail operations. Negotiations to obtain a more advantageous site are in progress. Adjacent taxiways will also be provided to facilitate receipt and dispatch of mail from air taxi routes centering at Boston and serving a network of key cities throughout New England and New York State.

Charlotte

The importance of Charlotte in affording mail service by air to the Carolinas is underscored by the fact that five air carriers are certificated to serve the city. The Post Office Department, because of substantial increases in mail volumes being handled, is completing plans to construct a greatly enlarged airport mail facility on a site of approximately one acre.

Cincinnati

In keeping with airport expansion plans at Cincinnati, Ohio, scheduled for completion in 1970, the Post Office Department is currently evaluating space requirements for the airport mail facility. Early studies indicate that double the existing area of about 6,000 square feet will be required. Emphasis is being given to mail loading and motor vehicle dock areas.
