Papers of a purely historic or journalistic content will not be eligible, but the subject may be considered to include studies in any related field, such as operation, administration, navigation, maintenance, economics and safety, as well as the fields of aeronautical science and engineering design and manufacture. Closing date of this competition is Dec. 31, 1955. REGIONAL ACTIVITY

     On June 30th, a meeting was held at the Commissioned Officers Mess, Naval Operating Base, Norfolk, Va., under the auspices of the Hampton Roads Section of the Society. The guest speaker at this meeting was Mr. James Edwards, Assistant Chief Engineer, Douglas Aircraft Co., who spoke on the subject of "A Philosophical Approach to Helicopters". Major Hal P. Crane, Program Chairman of the Hampton Roads Section, has advised the home office that there would be another meeting to be held in July, at which Mr. Robert Suggs, President of Petroleum Helicopters, will speak. A further meeting is planned for October and as soon as the program has been decided upon the information will be included in the Newsletter.

SECOND ANNUAL WEST COAST FORUM

     Of particular interest to the membership will be the announcement of the 2nd Annual West Coast Forum of the Society which will be held in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, Calif., on Sept. 21st and 22nd. Heading the Forum Committee will be Mr. Raymonf A. Young of Douglas Aircraft who is the Forum Chairman, Mr. J. Homer Overholser, Pacific Division of Bendix Aviation, Arrangements Chairman, Mr. Charles J. Tress, Indiana Gear, Exhibits Chairman.

     Four technical sessions are planned with 3 papers being given at each session. The subject of these sessions will be Design, Development, Operations, Power Plants. As soon as further details are available regarding the Western Forum, the information will also be included. in the Newsletter.

BOOK REVIEW

     Safety Through Steep Gradient Aircraft by R. M. Woodham, Associate Director, and Jerome Lederer, Director, Cornell-- Guggenheim Aviation Safety Center, 75 pages.

     This report reviews the problems of low speed operation and surveys various types of aircraft capable of neat vertical or short take-off and landing. It indicates that solutions to the problems are at hand, needing only intensive development and application to produce "steep-gradient" types of aircraft that can contribute not only to the safety of aviation but to its economic and social aspects as well. This report may be purchased at a
