[[underline]]SOCIETY HOLDS 2nd ANNUAL WEST COAST FORUM[[/underline]]

Hollywood, Calif., was the scene of the Society's 2nd ANNUAL WESTERN FORUM, when on September 21st and 22nd over 300 members and guests attended the two-day conference held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. During the two-ay sessions, technical papers were given on widely diversified subjects, all of which were enthusiastically received.

On Wednesday night, September 21st, a banquet was held in the Blossom Room of the hotel at which 185 guests heard Congressman Carl Hinshaw, (R. Cal.) speak. It was the opinion of Representative Hinshaw that both the manufacturers and the helicopter carriers are faced with a great need for a speed-up in the development of good commercial helicopters. Stating "that the future development of helicopter transportation depends greatly on the safety and economy that would be achieved. To this end the manufacturers must provide a helicopter that can be operated safely from city-center heliports at a cost per ton mile somewhere near that achieved on short haul operations by present fixed wing aircraft."

Congressman Hinshaw praised the CAB for its far-sighted action in authorizing the three existing helicopter carriers to conduct short haul common carrier service, and felt that its action had been fully justified. It is his opinion that the three helicopter carriers' inability to "become as yet entirely subsidy free" despite their "intelligent and strenuous efforts to reduce expenses and increase revenues may well be blamed on the high operating cost and limited carrying capacity of present equipment."

According to Congressman Hinshaw, the answer to the present day heavy traffic congestion in the metropolitan areas of large cities in the United States will be "making use of the third dimension" through short haul scheduled airline service, penetrating the centers of our metropolitan cities and linking those centers with the outlying suburban communities.

Prior to the dinner, a cocktail reception was held in the Aviation room at which time members and guests were privileged to inspect the exhibits on display in this room.

At a luncheon on Thursday, September 22nd, 102 guests heard a fine talk by Clarence Belinn, President of Los Angeles Airways.

A list of the papers presented at this meeting is contained on the last page of this issue of the [[underline]]Newsletter[[/underline]], and a tear sheet located at the bottom of that page may be used to order bound proceedings of the meeting. Cost to non-members: $5.50; members $3.50.
