Speaking of carrying capacity, here's a recent sample of Bell muscle at work. The project was to build a forest lookout tower. The experiment called for a helicopter to find a site, then bring in men and material. After operations were set up ten miles away, the Bell shuttle began. This mighty mite airlifted crew, lumber, rock drill, tools, steel and food —— a total of 36,700 pounds. Yet in just four working days(or 27 1/2 hours' flying time) the job of erection was complete. By comparison, ordinary transportation, requiring twelve men to work three months, would have cost $10,800 just for salaries alone. The helicopter bill, incidentally, came to $2,700 plus $200 for salaries.. a saving of some $8,000!
