NEW YORK AIRWAYS

6.3.7 TAXIING - Continued

6. Throttle -- 2300-2500 engine rpm.
7. Collective pitch lever -- Increase to obtain 20-23 inches Hg manifold pressure. To stop taxiing, use cyclic stick and brakes if desired.
8. Cyclic stick -- Displace in the desired direction to start taxiing. (Use pitch control and cyclic stick displacement to control speed.)

CAUTION: It is possible for the rotor blades to hit the droop stops while taxiing if the directional pedals or cyclic stick are displaced excessively. This can be recognized by a heavy thumping noise. Use of directional pedals should be held to a minimum. Cyclic control is recommended.

9. Directional pedals -- As required. When the helicopter stops, return cyclic stick to neutral and reduce collective pitch and engine rpm.

NOTE: When taxiing or turning in strong crosswinds, caution must be used. Should a rolling-over tendency be noticed, the helicopter must be airborne immediately. The best practice is to keep the cyclic stick into the wind and maintain 2500 rpm in order that take-off power may be applied more rapidly.

6.3.8 TAKE-OFF

1. Attitude Indicator -- Set.
2. Fuel booster pump switch -- On.
3. Mixture lever -- Rich.
4. Longitudinal stick positioner wheel and indicator -- As desired.
5. Crew and passengers -- Alerted for take-off. (No Smoking and Fasten Seat Belt Signs -- On.
6. Area -- Check, clear for take-off.
7. Carburetor heat lever -- Cold.

Take-Off to Hover

While hovering check the following:
1. Pressures
   a. Fuel
   b. Engine Oil
   c. Transmission oil
2. Temperatures:
   a. Engine Oil
   b. Cylinder head
   c. Transmission oil
3. Cyclic stick positioner:
The stick positioner is used to give maximum cyclic stick travel and allows stick to remain in the same relative location to the pilot regardless of cg.
a. To check the cyclic longitudinal stick position, hover crosswind. (When the indicator is aft of HOVER position, forward stick positioning will be required; roll wheel aft. When the indicator is forward of HOVER position, aft stick positioning will be required; roll wheel forward). When the longitudinal position of the cyclic stick is at HOVER position, it is actually 1-1/2 inches aft of the geometric center of travel (neutral).
