G. SNAKE BITES

1. Definition

There are 4 poisonous snakes in the United States. They are:
(1) Rattlesnakes or pitvipers. They have a pit on each side of the head between the eyes and nostrils.
(2) Copperheads
(3) Cottonmouth Moccasions [[Moccasins]]
(4) Coral-found along the coastal lowlands in the southeast.

2. Symptoms
(1) Pain is immediate and may cause slight swellings
(2) The victims will become weak
(3) Shortness of breath
(4) Nauseousness
(5) Rapid pulse
(6) Sometimes dimness of vision

3. Treatment
(1) If the bite is non-poisonous, treat it the same as for any other wound. If the bite is poisonous, have victim stop any muscular activity.
(2) Tie a band firmly above the bite, tight enough to prevent blood flow in the vessel.
(3) With a sterilized knife, make cross cuts 1/4" wide over suspected deposit point.
(4) If available, apply suction using a suction cup. If not, the mouth will do, for one hour or more. The snake poison is not poisonous orally, only when it is in the blood stream. Keep the victim lying down and obtain medical care.
