Even though New York Airways' Fifth Annual Report characterizes the year 1956 "primarily as a period of preparation for further development" the report reflects several strikingly significant advances.

The report, released by Robert L. Cummings, Jr., New York Airways president showed a passenger increase of 76 per cent over 1955 with a total of 43,205 revenue passengers flown in 1956.

Another outstanding improvement was the more than 100 per cent increase in mail poundage carried in recent months. In 1956 the average monthly pounds of mail carried was 96,642. Mail loads are now running at the rate of some 200,000 pounds per month.

Singular features in the year's activities according to Mr. Cummings were the acquisition of the three Sikorsky S-58 helicopters and the inauguration of service into Manhattan.

The S-58, the largest commercially certificated helicopter, carries 12 passengers as compared with the seven carried in the S-55. New York Airways' fleet consists of five S-55's, three S-58's, and a three-place Bell 47-H.

The significant increase in mail poundage carried in recent months is attributable to the opening of the Manhattan heliport at West 30th Street and the Hudson River. When the 12-passenger S-58's are equipped with floatation gear a comparable increase in passenger totals is anticipated.
