| May 2d | Col Jas V Bomford S Asst Com'r Raleigh NC |   |(Brought on from Page 57) between him and Lowry, I had no objections, and would so inform all parties. Roberts, acknowledged himself, that the Spirits & Rosin, was Lowry's part of the Turpentine Crop - he further stated that Lowry had been in the habit of dealing at his store and paying up his account, as to the Spirit Barrels, referred to by Roberts, McCullum agreed to stand responsible for the payment of them, for Lowry. This, however, was not what Roberts wanted, he was for getting possession of the Rosin & Spirits. Upon further conversation with Lowry, I found he was not willing to trust Roberts with the disposal of his property. Believing in the principle of every man having the right to dispose of his own property, unless restricted in so doing by legal attachment, I gave Lowry, who is an honest & worthy Colored Citizens, authority, to either let Peacock & McCullum ship his Rosin & Spirits, or haul it off from their yard and place it in the hands of other parties, as there was no legal claim held by due process of law to prevent him. The practice of white men taken the law into their own against the colored people in this county, has become a common practice, greatly to the injury of the Freedmen. This man Roberts, has been complained about of this office upon other occasions. To seize the property of Freedmen, is in violation of law, in a right these Rebels claim  Alfred Thomas, Agt B.R.F.R.A.L. |

Collector for the bounty of Richmond N.C. will until further orders be performed by an Officer to be appointed from these Head Qts. distinct from the Sheriff of said County of Richmond, who, orders to send on the name of some person duly qualified to fill the Office | Wrote to General Alfred Duchey, May 5th, at Rockingham, Richmond to recommend a suitable person to fill the Office |
