This agreement made and entered into this 31st day of Aug 1865 between R. Townsend Planter of Robeson Co. of the one part and John Townsend Berry Townsend and Louisa Townsend Colored Freedman and a woman of the other part. Witnesseth that the said R. Townsend agrees to compensate said freedman and woman at the following rates respectively, to wit to John 17½ bush of corn 10 bushels of Potatoes and ten lbs Pork with his rations of food & 1 pr of shoes a suit of clothes a hat and regular [[strikethrough]] attend [[/strikethrough]] medical attendance, To Berry the same as above,, to the woman Louisa her food clothing shoes and medical attendance, until the first of Jan. And the above named freedman and woman on her part agree to receive the above compensation in full of all demands for their labor for the year 1865. And they further agree to serve the said R. Townsend faithfully and efficiently all his lawful orders as they did before they had been emancipated until the end of the year.
