Dear Mr. Seligmann,

Many thanks for your letter of the 31st ult.

The position of the portrait of the Comte de Champchinetz by Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. is as follows -

One of my clients, a very wealthy American lady, whom I took down to Knole to see this picture last summer, was very interested in it, and asked to see the picture in her home in New York. The portrait is there now.

The price she was asked was 40,000 Dollars (£8,000) I do not know if she will keep it, but I rather think she will, but you know what these American buyers are like, they like to have a picture for weeks and weeks before coming to a decision.

On the other hand Lord Sackville might be tempted to take a lower price in order to settle the business, and, therefore, if you would care to suggest what sort of price you would be prepared to pay for this now as a cash deal, I would see what I can do, and let you know immediately.

I should like to do business with you, and you can rely on my doing everything in my power to put it through.
