You will doubtless be interested to hear that we have just brought over a well-known painting by MANET, which may certainly be considered one of the most desirable pictures a museum could acquire.

It is the famous portrait of "Antonin Proust" - a full length picture - height 73 inches, width 43 inches - painted in 1877 and reproduced in the book of MANET by Theodore Duret, the eminent French critic.

MANET whose friendship with Proust dated back to their college years, has revealed in this work, the character and personality of his model as only a master can do it, and in such manner that the great talent of the artist is fully manifested.

Considering the rarity of such important and beautiful pictures by this great artist - even more so since the Havemeyer bequest to the Metropolitan Museum - we think you would be interested in seeing this painting, and if you happen to be in New York, it would be a pleasure to show it to you; but if this is impossible, we could send you a photograph of the picture.

Trusting that we may have the pleasure of your visit, and if you do not plan to be in New York, that we may hear from you, we remain

Respectfully yours

(C.M.de Hauke)
