Endorsement Communications of Mr. Taylor Beattie Attorney, dated New Orleans December 20th 1865. (B34) requesting the restoration of a certain lot of ground situated in the Parish of Orleans and used for Government School purposes.
Referred from Hd. Qrs. Bu. of R & AL State of Louisiana. 
"Respectfully returned there: Hd. Qr's Bu of R.F. & A.L. State of Louisiana. The building referred to was taken possession of by the military authorities when in a state of great dilapidation having been used for a long time as barracks for the U.S.C. forces and other troops at Thibodaux, La.  Repairs and improvements amounting to about four hundred dollars has been made for the purpose of getting it up for a freedmens school. The building is absolutely necessary for a school and no other arrangements can be made unless these repairs are paid for. If the petitioners will pay for the repairs and improvements made on the property it will be given up and a new building can be erected."

"Respectfully returned to Mr. Skipwith with the information that the General Superintendent has no knowledge or information how the piano came in the possession of Madam DeMatie. There is no inventory of this piano on the property returns in his office."

"Respectfully returned. The building used as a school on the plantation owned by Mrs. Nickolas has been rented by Dr. Burthe, her son in law and duly authorized Agent from August 1st to Dec 31. 1865.

Endorsement "on communication of Lt B F Burnham Asst Supt Ed 1 School Dir La. dated New Orleans January 1st 1866. (B.1.) requesting instructions as to whether the renting of school buildings within the limits of his Division is to be continued.
"Respectfully returned, I am instructed by the Asst. Commissioner Bu of R.F. & A L State of Louisiana to say that he will withdraw his protection in carrying out the provisions of existing orders regulating the labor of freedmen from all planters or other parties who will not cooperate or who in any manner interfere with the establishment of schools for freedmen in this state.
