Endorsement of L #4:-
"Respectfully returned. You will endeavor to impress on the minds of the Freedmen in your parish, that as soon as the present stock of school materials is exhausted (and such is nearly the case now), the Government will not furnish any additional material and that they must purchase the same themselves. In regard to the sales school material, you will strictly adhere to the circular recently sent to you and only sell whatever you can. Damaged books, slates, charts, etc., when unfit for further use. You will expend on your monthly school property returns accompanied by voucher to that effect, the benches, desks, etc. - material scattered all over the parish, You will endeavor to collect and take under your charge, and if such property has not been taken up by your predecessor and turned over to you, he became strictly guilty of disobedience of orders. Again this property which was provided at a heavy expense by the U.S. Government must be gathered and accounted for on the monthly school property returns to this office. When you come to this city, I will talk the matter over with you verbally."

"Respectfully returned, It appears by this report in the case of Mr. Chrisfields school at Houma, that the amount he received as a salary was $75 - whilst the amount derived from the sale of Tuition Tickets is reported as be $33 - making a difference of $42 - whence did the money come?
In the case of Miss Thibots school the amount of salary received by her is reported at $60 - without any evidence being furnished as to the source from which such an amount has been attained, except perhaps that of $5.55 transferred to you as for your effort."
