The defalcation of a public officer entrusted with the affairs of such a department, as that in which he has been placed — casts a shadow upon the cause. We hope for the sake of the good, you are inaugurating, for the Freedman, that this whole matter will be cleared up, and that Mr Hubbs will stand before you an innocent man — and that the Board of Education for the blacks, will be carried forward, as the best means, for improving the mental & moral condition, of that most interesting class of people.

The contract made with Mr Hubbs. will give you Books at much lower rates than they are now selling, as prices have materially advanced since that time. This we consider binding until after the six months have expired from date of contract. After that period we shall hold ourselves prepared to give you the very best terms, we can afford — and shall hope that our connection in a business way will prove mutually satisfactory.
