Outrages are generally attended to by the civil authorities, & only the following cases have been reported to me. Sally Charles complained in December last that David Alison gave her thirty blows with a hickory. The case was referred to a magistrate, but Sally Charles failed to appear to prosecute. In August Perry Benson complained that Taylor Clark shot him through the fleshy part of the arm with a revolver. Referred to magistrate, Benson not quite positive as to identity, the offense having been committed by night; Clark claimed that he could prove an alibi; result not yet reported to me. In the same month Henry & Patrick Stigall beat & scratched Berry Blasingame; referred to magistrate, who issued warrant; offenders have fled, or are hid in the swamp.

Under head of offences committed by freedmen against whites, Wallace Williams, colored, stabbed in August a Thomas Turner, inflicting a severe but not dangerous wound. Wallace is on bail, awaiting his trial for assault with intent to kill. Turner is also awaiting trial for riot.
