Giovanni Battista TIEPOLO (Venice 1696-Madrid 1770)

"Madonna with Child Holding Bird"

Oil on canvas: 24-1/2" x 19-1/2"

The Virgin is shown in a half-length pose, her head slightly bent forward and gazing downward. On her left arm is the Child Jesus; in His left hand He holds a little bird, and in His right, the string to which it is attached. Over the Virgin's head is a cream-colored drapery; her cloak is blue, and her robe rose-colored.

A similar subject but treated differently is in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. (Kress Collection) to which this painting could be a companion piece.
