IN FRAGMENTS OF LIFE, METAPHYSICS AND ART

Léo Bronstein employs the medium of a series of letters from various individuals-a prisoner, a soldier, a philosopher, a mathematician and a teacher- through which to provide an exciting slant upon art and its history.

The writers share a common hatred for the man-made distinction between spirit and matter, and at the same time recognize the two-fold pattern of history and consciousness. Each also sees the relationship of the fragment to the whole through a "fissure or tear in the accustomed," as one letter puts it. Each yearns for the whole and tries to find it in the fragment that has meaning for him. But, perhaps because the author is enamored of it, it is primarily art which serves as an example of and mirrors the two-fold pattern of existence; and space in the art of painting "is the fragment in which the unseizable whole of life, material and moral, is ... seized." In the dialogue between two of the characters which follows upon the letters, synthetizing the ideas expressed in them, we are given a brief but profusely illustrated° history of Western art.

This is an exciting and profound book which deserves careful reading.

- The Editors

"Léo Bronstein has a poet's temperament rare among American writers on art. It is a gift of feeling which illuminates the work of art, and a hunger for striking and beautiful ideas wherever they appear -in history, metaphysics, religion and science. His response is always strong and deeply personal and is expressed with great warmth."

- MEYER SCHAPIRO, Professor of Fine Arts and Archeology at Columbia University
