The terms "landing area" and "aircraft" are used instead of "airport" or "airplane." Aviation is on the threshold of using several new types of vehicles which will alter the overall concept of air transportation - the VTOL, the supersonic transport, the ground effects machine, the Space vehicle, will be added to an extended development in the use of current type of aircraft. Studies should be made now to determine how to integrate them into the transportation complex of the future from the standpoint of safety. It is conceivable, for example, that inter-city helicopter operation will have as many stops as inter-city buses. From the standpoint of safety there should be at least an overall national plan to act as a guide, not duplicate the chaos that came with the automobile. This plan should include the desirable location of landing areas, essential facilities for safety, and a campaign to persuade the communities that the landing area can be a social, and life-saving, economic asset to its citizens.
