Port Authority- West 30th Street Heliport is Dedicated - 3

Mayor Wagner, on looking to the future, emphasized the City's pioneering interest in all phases of air transportation. He referred to its construction of La Guardia Airport, and soon afterward, International Airport said: "It is a tribute to the City's foresight that both these airports are available to meet today's needs. These facilities and the people working at them are New York's guarantee that it will retain its pre-eminence as the hub of world air, as well as land and sea transportation."
He recalled that "when the helicopter was young, and comparatively few people had learned to appreciate its versatility, it had already been put to work as an arm of the City government. The Police Department which has had an air arm since 1929, has been flying helicopters in the day-to-day patrol traffic observation and rescue missions since 1948. The Police fleet now consists of five machines."
Pier 41, East River, known as "New York City Heliport No. 1," and Pier A, at the Battery, were leased by the City to the Port Authority. These heliports are not available for commercial use.
Borough President Jack also commented on the need for the development of additional commercial heliports to serve Manhattan. He declared: "I am certain that the rate of success of this heliport on the West Side of Manhattan will be a determining factor in accelerating the need and development of another heliport in the near future somewhere along the East River Drive at a location most convenient to the midtown area.
