NEW YORK AIRWAYS
                 -6-

With the advent of multi-engine power an operational freedom of major significance became available for the first time to the air-carrier operator. The NYA Boeing V-107 is powered by two turbo-shaft engines -- light and small in size, with a low noise level, almost vibrationless, and permitting one-engine-out flight capability. A new family of turbine engines has been designed and developed by the General Electric Company (and certificated by the Federal Aviation Agency for commercial use) specifically to meet the particular requirements generated by vertical-lift aircraft. (Reference Chart 2.)
The turbine engine is designed to operate continuously at high rotating speeds compatible with that needed by the helicopter rotor system for aerodynamic considerations. It is a relatively lightweight powerplant as compared to the noisy reciprocating engine and produces approximately four times as much power per pound of engine weight. Its smallness of size facilitates a "buried" engine installation and consequently permits the helicopter designer to achieve low noise levels, compatible with community standards. The reliability of a powerplant design utilizing a rotary (rather than a reciprocating) movement for the development of thrust of horsepower has been clearly
