One problem with today's scheduled helicopter airline service is high cost of operation as related to the same number of seats in a fixed-wing aircraft; however, helicopters perform daily scheduled functions present day fixed-wing aircraft simply cannot perform.

In summary, a national effort must be launched by the Department of Transportation, the Department of Defense, Federal Aviation Agency, Civil Aeronautics Board and the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a series of "full throttle" programs developing V/STOL, STOL, and helicopters for short-short haul and short-haul scheduled airline transportation to meet the public needs of the 1970 time period.

AIRLINE INTEREST

In spite of press reports and criticism made from the academic world, the nation's airlines do have a major interest in short haul (50-500 miles) and short-short haul (0-50 miles) transportation. This includes V/STOL, STOL and helicopter applications to scheduled airline service in the 1970's applied to present day route patterns.

The nation's airlines are interested and are working towards the answers of the problems to reduce "Total Time".

It must be remembered - from a practical standpoint - the airlines as a matter of policy are not going to get into the matter of funding in depth new aircraft concepts as an industry. This would be endless as the sky.

FINANCIAL SOURCES

Many of the suggestions unfolding from this National Transportation Workshop to activate will require huge sums of dollars.
