Sir

A Freedman named "Bristre" Mathis comes to me with a complaint that a warrant has been issued to seize upon his goods and matters to satisfy a debt said to have been contracted some eight or nine years ago at a time when said "Brister" was a slave of David Sloan Mathis. A sale by which a debt was made against a slave was illegal by the laws of this state at that time and continued in force until they were freed by the Govt.

I trust that this complaint is unfounded as it would be a great injustice to "Brister" and bring upon me a painful and perplexing duty

I have the honor to be Sir
Your obt servant
