Lyrics of Love and Laughter

"Bless de food we gwine to eat——"
(You set still——I see yo' feet;
You jes' try dat trick agin!)
"Gin us peace an' joy. Amen!"

THE POET.

HE sang of life, serenely sweet,
With, now and then, a deeper note.
From some high peak, nigh yet remote,
He voiced the world's absorbing beat.

He sang of love when earth was young,
And Love, itself, was in his lays.
But ah, the world, it turned to praise
A jingle in a broken tongue.

A FLORIDA NIGHT.

WIN' a-blowin' gentle so de san'lay low,
San' a little heavy f'om de rain,
All de pa'ms a-wavin' an' a-weavin' slow,
Sighin' lak a sinnah-soul in pain.
