for me.

MR. PARKER
But I don't know how to cook.

ADELE
(Turns sharply.) You can learn.

MR. PARKER
Now look, Adele, if you got something on your mind, say it, 'cause you know damn well I ain't doin' no cooking.

ADELE
(Pause.)
All right, I will. A thought came to me today as it does every day, and I'm damn tired of thinking about it——

MR PARKER
What?

ADELE
——And that is, I've been down at that motor-license bureau so long, sometimes I forget the reasons I ever took the job in the first place.

MR. PARKER
Now look, everybody knows you quit college and came home to help your mama out. Everybody knows it! What you want me to do? Write some prayers to you?

(The two boys enter the back room from upstairs.)

ADELE
I just want you to get a job!

(The boys step into shop and stand apart from each other.)

BOBBY
Hey, Adele.

ADELE
Well! From what cave did you fellows crawl out of? I didn't know you hung around barber shops ... Want a haircut, boys?

BOBBY
The kitchen, that's it: we been washing dishes all day!

ADELE
I don't like that, Bobby!

THEO
And I don't like your attitude!

ADELE
Do you like it when I go out of here every morning to work?

THEO
There you go again with that same old tired talk: work! Mama understood about us, I don't know why you gotta give everybody a hard time ...

ADELE
That was one of Mama's troubles: understanding everybody.

THEO
Now don't start that shit with me!

ADELE
I have got to start that, Mr. Theopolis Parker!

MR. PARKER
Hold on now, there's no need for all this ... Can't we
