Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
Office of Superintendent of Education,
Raleigh, N.C., February 6, 1868.

Lieut. Jno. M. Foote,
Sub Asst. Com'r. Plymouth, N.C.

Lieutenant,
In reply to your application for a teacher for Jamesville, Martin Co. I regret to say that it will be impossible for me to send one, or the Northern Societies have discontinued commissioning them on account of the low state of their funds. The only aid we can render to the Freedmen in J. is to pay them, if necessary, a moderate, monthly rental for their school-building. If they wish for this, a petition to me to that effect is necessary, stating the amount per month, number of pupils, and name of P.O. address of the person authorized to receipt for the rent.
Yours respectfully,
F. A. Fiske
Supt. Education
