State of South Carolina
Barnwell Dist. Febry 11th 1866

Article of agreement between N. F. Kirkland M.D. and the Freedman, whose names are hereunto attached. 

Article 1st. The said Freedmen agree to hire theirselves as laborers on the plantation of the said N. F. Kirkland M.D. from the 1st of January 1866 to the 1st of January 1867. They agree to conduct theirselves honestly and civilly and to perform any labor on the said plantation or connected therewith that may be required by said proprietor.

Article 2nd. The said Freedmen agree to forfeit for every days absence from labor, with leave, fifty cts. without leave one Dollar and if absent one week without leave they are liable to be discharged and to forfeit their entire interest in the crop and the part so forfeited to be used in hiring other hands.

Article 3rd. They agree to take good care of all utensils with which they may be entrusted and to pay for the same if lost. They agree to keep their houses and premises in good order and repair.

Article 4th. They agree to be kind and gentle with all animals under their charge.

Article 5th. They agree to assist in building a gin house & Screw Pack The proprietor to pay for the sawed lumber & to hire a Carpenter to superintend and assist in building the same.
