Mrs. Bryan, 48, co-owner of Morristown Flying [[Service?]] was voted the medal yesterday by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, meeting at Pittsburgh, for her action in an April, 1958, crash that killed a Virginia power co-op manager and injured the pilot.
Mrs. Bryan said she had just refueled the helicopter with 51 gallons of gasoline and its two-man crew had indicated they were going back to work checking power lines for the Powell Valley Electric Co-operative, Jonesville, Va.
A witness said the helicopter took off, went into a steep right turn, then dived toward the ground from 50 or 100 foot altitude. It hit on the right, skid (part of it landing gear), and part of the cockpit were scattered nearly 100 feet away.
Both men were lying in the shattered helicopter when Mrs. Bryan reached it. As smoke began to pour from the machine, she crawled under the swirling blades on her hands and knees and turned off the motor, preventing a fire and explosion.
The occupants, strapped into their seats, were Davis L. McNeil, 49, manager of the [[?]], who was killed, and the pilot, John Ryan, 48, both of Jonesville. Mrs. Bryans's quick action possibly saved the injured pilot's life.
Mrs. Bryan has long been active in the Southeastern [[Section?]] of the 99' Inc., the organization of licensed women pilots and in the Civil Air Patrol, where she holds the rank of major.
Among the others cited were four Western Kentucky men who climbed into a 70-foot well in a five-hour effort to rescue a well driller trapped by a landslide. The medals went to James E. Jennings, 38, and B Franklin Jones, 22, Paducah; William M. Baldwin, Mayfield, and James W. Brame, Kirksey.

Mrs. Bryan Honored By Hero Fund
Special To The Journal
JEFFERSON CITY, Oct. 30-
Mrs. Evelyn S. Bryan, 48, of Jefferson City was honored today by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for heroism in her efforts to rescue the victim of a helicopter crash in 1958.
Officials of the commission announced in Pittsburgh, Pa., that they had approved the award of a bronze medal to Mrs. Bryan for saving the pilot of a helicopter from burning and a possible explosion in the crash at Morristown April 28, 1958. [[image]] MRS. BRYAN
The commission's citation gave this story of the incident: John J. Ryan, 34, the helicopter pilot, and Davis L. McNeil, 49, a utility manager, were taking off after a refueling stop at the Morristown Airport when the craft crashed.
The engine continued running and the whirling rotor blades pounded the runway, bouncing the light craft up and down. Four fuel tanks had broken, spreading gasoline on the runway. Dense

smoke began rising from the engine.
Mrs. Bryan, a flight instructor, was the only person on duty at the airport. She ran to the craft with a fire extinguisher.
She laid aside the extinguisher, crawled beneath the revolving blades, reached into the bouncing craft and turned off the ignition switch.
Then she returned for the fire extinguisher and sprayed the engine with foam, diminishing the smoke and reducing the danger of fire.
By this time three men had been attracted to the scene and the four tried to lift Ryan from the wreckage as he regained consciousness and began to moan.
On realizing he was badly injured, however, they decided to await medical aid. McNeil died in the crash and Ryan was hospitalized for several months.

Gets Medal, $250 For Heroic Act
Mrs. Evelyn Bryan, Morristown-Jefferson City pilot, is getting an added bonus along with her bronze medal. The award from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission includes $250 in cash, according to a letter Mrs. Bryan has just received from the Pittsburgh office of the commission.
Mrs. Bryan was one of the 35 Americans honored for acts of heroism during 1958. She saved the life of a pilot of the helicopter which crashed on takeoff at the Morristown airport.
She will probably use the $250 to obtain an airline transport rating (an advance instrument rating), Mrs. Bryan said today.

Should Mrs. Bryan's name, written once under each of her photos be included in the transcription of the article? like right in the middle? I'm not sure how to include them or if they are needed.
