Classes come in quick succession, and there is a great amount of knowledge to be learned and retained in the short time before being permanently assigned to a base somewhere in the United States. The purpose of teaching is to give the newly enlisted private a fundamental working knowledge of the Army and the many intricate ways peculiar only to that branch. Safeguarding military information, company administration, military customs and courtesies, Army and Wac regulations, hygiene, military sanitation and Army orientation are a few of the many types of classes attended.

However, the physical side of your life is not neglected, as you soon discover by the many stiff and sore muscles acquired during the first couple of weeks. Once a day there is a class in PT (physical training), designed to strengthen the various parts of your body. These are called the "strength progressing series", and gradually increase your physical stamina until at the end of five weeks [[crossed out]] are [[/crossed out]] you are doing things with ease which made you tired even to consider before.

You get to know a lot of people, making many friends and even more acquaintances. You are seriously distressed when the girl upstairs is given a medical discharge after a few weeks because of a [[crossed out]] bed [[/crossed out]] bad back, and rejoice when another who sleeps a couple of beds down from your hears that her husband is receiving a furlough and coming to see her.
