One of my first airplane rides was in the spring of 1935 was won in a contest. The LaTouraine Coffee flew its airplane over Boston and subrubs. For identification its airplane had a large white circle painted on the underside of the wing. When you saw it, you guessed the altitude and sent in your estimate with the can top. I have no idea how many people won, but I was one of them. Mr. Charles Cowan was the pilot.

After I got into High School, I took all the math and science courses that were offered. I shall be forever grateful for that decision. 

Just before I graduated from Winchester High School, Mass. in June 1938 I received my first flying lesson in April 1938. This took place at Logan Field, E. Boston, Mass. from E.W. Wiggins Airways. I passed each of the progressive Flight tests and received my Commerical and Instructor's Rating in the summer of 1939. 

In January 1940 I was chosen one of the Nation's 10 Outstanding Boys and girls of high school age for 1939. This was noted in The Christian Science MOnitor, Boston, Mass. January 25, 1940.

In the summer of 1941 I was appointed Flight Inspector for Private Licenses by the FAA.

At this time the govenrment was expanding their flight training program to include colleges and universities throughout the UNited States. The first Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) was initiated in the fall of 1939. I instructed nine of these programs for E.W. Wiggins at Boston and Norwood, Mass. When all civilian flying was stopped on the East Coast
