APPENDIX I

Test Results on Intermediate Flying Clothes.

Clothes Tested:
Subject 1. Alpaca lined suit, WASP gloves, A-6 boots, intermediate helmet, and ski socks.
Subject 2. Alpaca lined jacket, quilt lined pants, J. Cochran boots, WASP gloves, intermediate helmet, and ski socks.

General Test Conditions:
1. Nose compartment B-17E.
2. 35,000 feet for 1 1/2 hours.
3. Temperature -10° to -14°C.
4. No activity, no wind.

Specific test Conditions.
1. Subject 1 wearing alpaca lined suit leaned against bare metal seatback.
2. Subject 2 wearing quilted pants sat on floor.
3. No woolen underwear worn.

General Results:
Warmth:
1. Both suits proved unsatisfactory for protection at this temperature which which is at least 10°C lower than specified temperature.
2. Although the shivering point was not reached, both subjects felt chilled and needed some kind of movement to keep themselves warm.
Comfort:
Both subjects felt the suits were, in general, suitable for their assigned job.

Specific Results:
Warmth:
1. Subject 1 found that button over cuffs on alpaca flying suits were apt to slip out of boot and ride up leg.
2. Subject 2 found J. Cochran boots inadequate against cold at this temperature and changed to A-6 boots after 1/2 hour at 35,000 feet.
3. Both subjects found WASP gloves inadequate at this temperature and had to curl fingers together inside to keep hands warm after about 45 minutes at 35,000 feet.
4. Subject 2 found quilted pants not as warm as alpaca jacket, but sitting on floor may have affected this.
5. Intermediate helmets and A-6 boots satisfactory at this temp.

Comfort:
1. Subject 1 found square patch pockets on jacket inaccessible when wearing harness. Split side pockets in jacket worn by Subject 2 found satisfactory.
