Appendix 1.

Explanation of Terms and Signs.

Bust, waist and hip circumference are nude measurements (about one inch less than measurements taken over light clothing. The circumference of the garment itself is more than the nude measure by an amount depending on the type of garment, the desired fit, and necessities of freedom of motion. (To give an example, the excess of garment over nude measure is 4 inches in the summer flying suit).

Sleeve length represents a measurement taken from the middle of the collar back over the top of the shoulder and down the hanging arm to the wrist. This determines fit in the standing position. Allowance for freedom of motion depends on the cut of the sleeve and armscye.

Trouser inseam and trouser outseam represent measurements from the crotch and belt respectively to the sole of the shoe. This, in ordinary tailoring practice, allows for a trouser cuff. The actual height of the trouser leg from the floor in any given type of garment must be allowed for in using these measurements.

Coverall length is the total length of the garment from the juncture of the collar and shoulder seams to the bottom of the trouser leg.

Averages are not given where the number of cases is less than 10: * indicates an average based on more than 10 but less than 20 cases. Maxima and minima are not given where the number of cases is less than 20.
