MISS JEAN ROSS HOWARD

Jean Ross Howard is Director of Helicopter Activities in the Office of Public Affairs of the Aerospace Industries Association.

Miss Howard joined the Aerospace Industries Association in 1945 as Staff Assistant to the Public Relations Director of the Personal Aircraft Council, and in 1950 was named Assistant to the Director, Helicopter Council, and until her present position served as Assistant Director of the then Vertical Lift Aircraft Council.

Miss Howard was born in Washington, D. C., and attended Sidwell's Friends School and Western High School in the District. She attended Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut, and George Washington University in Washington, D. C., was graduated from the latter with a BA degree in 1939. During the period 1952-55, she resumed, in addition to duties at AIA, her scholastic career in graduate study in Transportation at American University, Washington, D. C. Miss Howard's graduate thesis discussed "Selected Economic Problems in Operation of Common Carrier Helicopters." She obtained her private pilot license under the Civilian Pilot Training Program at George Washington University in 1941, and obtained her helicopter pilot rating at the Bell Helicopter School, Fort Worth, Texas, in June 1954.

During World War II (1943-45) Miss Howard served with the American Red Cross as Program Director of the Air Force Rest Camp on the Isle of Capri. In 1943, prior to her wartime service, Miss Howard served as a student-trainee with the WASPS, and from 1941 to 1943 she was employed as pilot-secretary to the combined Washington office of Aeronca Aircraft Corp., Piper Aircraft Corp., and Taylorcraft Aviation, Inc.

Miss Howard has participated in three Transcontinental Air Races and in one International Air Race. In 1971, she was a U.S. Judge at the First World Helicopter Championships in Bueckeburg, West Germany, the U. S. Delegate and Judge at the Second World Helicopter Championships in 1973, in Middle Wallop, England and in 1978, a U. S. Judge at the Third Championships in Vitebsk, U.S.S.R.

She is a past president of The American Newspaper Women's Club, Secretary of the National Aeronautic Association, a member of Aviation/Space Writers Association, The Ninety-Nines, Inc., National Aviation Club, Aero Club of Washington, Army Aviation Association, an Honorary Fellow of The American Helicopter Society and founder and first president of The Whirly-Girls - international women helicopter pilots.

For her work to encourage the establishment of hospital heliports and the use of heicopters in emergency medical service, Miss Howard was named a Consultant to the Emergency Health Branch of the U.S. Public Health Service and an Honorary Member of the Wives Wing of the Aerospace Medical Association.

Her book "All About Helicopters" was published in the Modern Aircraft Series.
