prior to her wartime service, Miss Howard served as a student-trainee with the WASPS, and from 1941 to 1943 she was employed as pilot-secretary to the combined office of Aeronca Aircraft Corp., Piper Aircraft Corp., and Taylorcraft Aviation, Inc., in Washington.

Miss Howard has participated in two Transcontinental air races and in one international air race. In 1955, she was instrumental in the organization of the Whirly-Girls, an organization of women helicopter pilots. The original group of 13 pilots has now grown to 49 pilots from Canada, France, Germany, Puerto Rico, Switzerland and the United States.

In 1958 and again in 1959, Miss Howard was named National Chairman of the American Helicopter Society Forum. She is a member of the American Newspaper Women's Club, Aviation/Space Writers Association, The Ninety-Nines, Civil Air Patrol, National Aviation Club, Aero Club of Washington, The American Helicopter Society (Honorary Fellow), Army Aviation Association of America, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Whirly-Girls. She was Chairman of the 1962 Wright Memorial dinner.

In announcing the selection of Miss Howard to receive the annual award, Washington Air derby Association President Bill Russell, himself a veteran pilot, praised Miss Howard for her sustained and untiring efforts to promote aviation not only in Washington, but on a nationwide and an international basis.

Miss Howard currently is employed with the Aerospace Industries Association in the capacity of Assistant Director of the Vertical Lift Aircraft Council.
