422 Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala Feb 22" 1867 /432 Elmore Abert Esqr Collector &c Mobile Ala Sir I have omitted heretofore to inform you that pursuant to an engagement made at your request I went to Mobile on the thursday last in order to be present on Friday last, the date fixed by you. I remained until Monday morning when being unable to see you, I returned to Montgomery. Your obedient servant Maj Gen & Asst Commr Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala Feb 22" 1867 /443 Mower Rev B.F. Opelika, Alabama Dear Sir I am this morning in receipt of your note of the 21" inst, asking what can be done for the support of the school for white persons in your vicinity. In reply I have to say that the "school fund" which was given originally for the education of the "inhabitants" being exclusively appropriated by the white portion, the efforts of the Bureau are by way of compensation given to the education of those who are thus deprived. On the 27" of December last the State Superintendent of Common Schools sent to the Superintendent of schools in your County an order on the County tax collector for $9,696.04 to be applied to school for white children, as soon as that amount should be collected. As taxes have now I believe pretty generally paid in, this seems to be the fund most properly accessible to wishes. Your obedient servant Maj Gen & Asst Commr 423 Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala Feb 22" 1867 419/420 Greene Bvt Maj S.C. Act Asst Adjt Genl Macon Ga Major In pursuance of my duties as Asst Commissioner, I am about to visit in succession a number of posts within this District, and to be absent ten or twelve days. I have the honor to report the fact for your information. Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant Major General Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala Feb 22" 1867 Hough Bvt Lt Col Alfred L. Act. Asst. Adjt. Genl Louisville Kentucky Colonel I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt this morning, of your note of 14" inst, requesting me, by direction of Major General Thomas, to send copies of monthly reports made by me to Maj Gen O.O. Howard, Commissioner &c. In reply I have to state that the order of General Howard do not require of Assistant Commissioners any Monthly Reports, beyond the usual "Returns", "Rosters" &c, which indicate numerically the operations of the Bureau. It was formerly customary to send Monthly a sort of general narrative of affairs, but this was long ago discontinued by myself as I found it in my judgement much better to resort to specific statements, exhibits and interrogatories, sent as circumstances dictated. It will of course give me pleasure to send to General Thomas any information as to Bureau affairs he may desire, and hereafter I shall transmit for his information copies of each letters as I may think of interest to him. I am Colonel Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant Maj Genl & Asst Commr
