438 Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala March 4" 1867 437/439 Gardner S.S. Sub Asst Commr Greenville Ala Sir Your three (3) communications (one of the 2" and two of the 3" insts) asking for blank Monthly Reports of rations issued to destitute stating that rice instead of corn meal has been issued you for the Colony notwithstanding my letter of the 27" Ult, and making certain statements as to negroes being run off to Cuba, are received. I forwarded the Agent of Butler Co the blank he wished on the 26" Ult. I made arrangements with the Commissary here to forward you corn meal instead of rice but before the meal was shipped to Greenville the Commissary received a positive order from the Chf Comsy Dist of the Chattahoochee to issue rice entirely in lieu of all other forms of bread-stuff. I am aware that the rice is not an equivalent for other forms of bread-stuff and the matter will be represented to the General on his return, as will also the statement as to negroes being sold into Cuba.
