Olucten Pike County Ala. / Sir Yours of the 12th inst stating that certain freedman who were under contract have left you and have taken from you certain of your property is received In reply the Asst Commissioner directs me to say that so far as the alleged theft is concerned the parties are amendable to the criminal law. As to the freedmen having violated their contract by leaving before its expiration you have the same recourse as in any other violation of contract that is to sue for damages Very Respectfully Your Obdt Servant O.D. Kizer was indicted by a Grand Jury of Dallas County Circuit Court for stealing Cotton, he forfeited his bond, was captured, and is now serving out his sentence for stealing.
