I have the honor to acknowledge receipt this day of your communication transmitting thirty five (35) appointments of Agents and Clerks in this Dist.  The following appointments are returned on account of what is presumed to be clerical errors - the appointments of M.M. Gilbreath, JK Greene, D.C. Turrantine, C.C. Sheels, C.C. Gewin, James Danforth, J.J. Mitchell, C.A. Tinge, W.C. Garrison, and W.I. Pointer, their salary being stated at forth seven dollars and sixty seven cents (47.67/100) monthly, instead of forty one dollars and sixty seven cents ($41.67/100) as requested.  Also the appointment of John W. Burns as Clerk whose salary is stated at $100.00/100 per month, instead of $80.00/100 as requested.  I have the honor also to request the revocation of the appointment of Andrew Geddes as Clerk at $100.00/100 per month, to date from the 1st inst.  He has been suspended from duty having received and accepted a commission in the Army.

In forwarding you the appointment of Messrs Smyth and Bartlett as clerks at $100.00/100 per month, it is not intended to interfere with any changes you may think it desirable to make in your clerical force.  These appointments were asked for in accordance with Orders from the Commissioner, before your detail as A.A.Q.M. &c. and having been received are accordingly forwarded.  The appointment of John W. Burns was also received but will be returned on account of an important clerical error.  Whatever changes you desire

to make notify this Office of promptly that they may be recommended to the Commissioner in accordance with circular 24 5th Par. Current series from the Commissioner.

In reply to yours of the 1st inst. asking an increase in the pay of Mr O'Connor your Clerk, I have the honor to state that such increase cannot be allowed.  Mr O'Connor receiving the same pay as most of the other clerks on duty at Sub. Dist. Offices.
