G82 Endorsement on letter of J.S. Garrett
Hd Qrs Pensacola Fla July 22nd 1867
Respectfully returned an officer has been sent 30 miles to endeavor to arrange this matter. Marquis cannot pay at present business being very dull in lumber he has been know to one of the officers here for a year past and is believed to be a well meaning man who has not thought of doing wrong to those he has employed his statement is forwarded herewith. It is not seen what measures could be employed to enforce the immediate payment of this debt. There is no evidence in the case except so far as Marquis chooses to acknowledge the debt and if any man is to be imprisoned until such a debt is discharged the result here would be rather extraordinary for Fort Perkins would not contain one half of the offenders.
