Eufaula Alabama March 19 1868
Respectfully returned to W.E. Connelly Sub Ast Commr with the following remarks. In Feby 1867 myself and wife came to Ala from Mass at our own expense under an engagement to teach freedpeople for one year at a salary of $1500 per year. Mr C.W. Buckley late Supt. of Education D of A. informed me by letter of date Oct 3rd 1867 that the Govt withdrew its aid after Oct 1st 1867 but that transportation would be furnished myself and wife, to our home at Concord Mass. and that back salaries would be paid, and did pay Miss Jennie's our assistant for both Aug and September 1867. After this application was forwarded to Hon T D Elliot I received from Mr C.W. Buckley Supt of Ed D of A $175.--125 being payment of Aug salaries for self and wife and the remaining $50 for rent of school buildings. Hence under the engagement Sept salaries are still due myself and wife also transportation to our home at Concord Mass.
