H 277 Endorsement on letter of Lieut H L Haskell Office Agent Bureau RF & A.L. Widower July 6 1868 I have the honor to Report the alleged outrages committed upon Anthony Poole near Roanoke Randolph Co Ala on the 11th May 1868 have been investigated by me and that far as I could learn the statements of Anthony Poole are true It is said that some of these parties publicly boast of having assisted in inflicting the brutal punishment upon Anthony and that they threaten the life of any person who may interfere with them for such acts. I was a few days ago cautioned privately by a friend to be on my guard as some of the parties mentioned by Anthony threatened to kill me and also burn the town in which I lived. Until recently the civil authorities have been able to preserve order in this county but since the organization of the Ku Klux the whiteman’s Clubs &c it seems that lawlessness and bloodshed stalk abroad in the land. I hope and earnestly request that the military authorities may cause those parties to be brought to trial and if found guilty punished in accordance with the crime they may have committed because if there is not an example made of some of those lawless characters there will be no safety for either freed people or white union men

H 246 Endorsement on letter of Joseph T Johnston
Sub Dist of Selma B.R.F. & A.L. Selma Ala July 18 1868
Respectfully forwarded to Asst Commr State of Ala with the request that the endorsement of June 2 be revoked so far as it required me to have the Corn & fodder turned over to Isham Garrett upon the further evidence I am satisfied that he must look for his pay to Tom Pitts who hired him and who appears to be the rascal in this case. The point upon which my recommendation of May 28 was based was that a conversation was sworn to between Mrs. Poole & Tom Pitts in which it was agreed that she should keep the corn until the fuss was over. I am satisfied that no such conversation took place. If Johnston gets what he claims of Mrs. Poole all the rest of the Negroes may in the same way claim from her what is owed Tom Pitts. The workmen interested with Tom Pitts not Mrs Poole as it seems It will be a pretty hard case if she advances feed furnished tools and after Tom Pitts half of the crop is eaten up he obliged to pay his workmen out of her half. (over)
