Sir
1st Lieut Charles W. Pierce, Vet'r, Res, Corps, having received orders from Adjutant General's office Washington D.C. to report to General Howard for duty, in the Freedmans Bureau. Was ordered to report in person to General Swayne at Montgomery Ala, and while enroute was attacked with inflamation of the lung as is set forth by the enclosed physicians certificate. Lieut Pierce desires me to say, that as soon as he is able to travel he will proceed on his journey without delay
