of Morgan, State of Alabama which in order to its protection and preservation required his personal presence and supervision. The said County of Morgan was southern disputed territory and was the scene of repeated raids by detachments of rebels and United States troops. Your petitioner was there, because it was his intent to be there, to preserve his property there. He was never in the military service of the Confederate States, and never held any office, civil or diplomatic, on any agency, foreign or domestic under said Confederate States. He repeats that he never left his house aforesaid for the purpose of engaging in, or abiding or endeavoring the rebellion, but [[crossed out]] solely [[/crossed out]] for the purpose above stated.
