Sir

I learn there was a meeting of a few of the members of the Methodist Church for the purpose of organising a Sabbath Scool for the benefit of the blacks, also for the purpose of devising a basis for a day school, tho result has in past been made known, In some of the above I feel that a Statement is necessary from some one viz At the Suggestion of many prominent citizens, (one of the principels in the above meeting) last fall a colored man (a preacher) by the assistance of other freedman bought a lot and built a house at considerable expense and commenced a School. The said freedman was getting on exceedingly well he has some thirty five or forty scholars; and the scholars were learning extremely well, he stated to me a few days since that in a short time, his school would number seventy to eighty. In his house he has a regular Sabbath School and competent teachers (black) in fact every thing was moving on well, No disposition of the whites to interfere or manifest any Simpathy for the education or advancement of the freedman, untill
