On the 13' Apl. Genl. Wilsons forces passed near my Plantation & took off some 24 mules. They took with them the same number of negroes, for the purpose as they said, to take the mules to the main column marching some two miles off. On the 15' Apl. the negroes returned bringing with them five broken down mules & one horse, which I fed and recruited & used. A great many of the neighboring planters suffered as I did & had stock brought back like mine.
Some three or four weeks afterwards Genl. A.J. Smith with his forces took Montgomery. Thinking there might be some trouble about retaining this stock, myself and others applied to Genl. Smith to allow us to keep it. He at once consented to do so & ordered his Provost Marshal to furnish as a paper confirming to us this stock in lieu, in part, of what had been taken from us.
Then the matter rested until about 20" Jany a notice was served on Genl B, by a Mr Russell a Justice of the Peace in Lowndes Co.
