Gen. W. Swayne

Dr. Sir,
I wrote you a few weeks since that I should go to Talladega, Ala. as a missionary to the Freedmen and desired your protection. - I commenced my journey with one member of my family, and others were to follow me in the fall if I was successful but on my way, I was taken suddenly ill, and obliged to return quite disappointed; and owing to the lateness of the season, I can not go at present.

Owing to the very good interest among the Freedmen in schools and for religious meetings, I feel anxious to labor among them and to hear from them at Talladega -
