Hayneville Feb 16" 1866

Gen Swayne

Ransome a freedman contracted with one Miles & Fayg - for 1866 - They give him an interest in the crop together with Seventy dollars extra, he being a common blacksmith - they also permit to have his own horse on the place fed by them while in their use; also to raise poultry of any kind -

Ransome has been doing good work for them for some two weeks - but now comes to me and wishes to be released from his contract because he states that Miles & Fayg will not permit him to raise hogs -

This being the first case of the kind before me would be pleased to hear from you on this point -

I have the pleasure of stating to you that the colored population are well satisfied and doing well in this county -

Very truly yours &c
