this depot for the present month Capt [[Grier?]] informs me that he telegraphed the Commissary at Mobile for additional supply of meal but failed to receive it. Several of the Counties were delayed in receiving their rations in consequence of this failure. There is much complaint of suffering for want of food in Bibb, Shelby and Jefferson more particularly in the latter county.
It has occured to me General that it would save much trouble and expense to have the supplies for the sub depots at Demopolis, Tuscaloosa and Talladega shiped directly to the agents at those points from Mobile and thus save the trouble & expense of storing them They could be sent by river directly to Demopolis and Tuscaloosa, and the estimate being fixed there could be no difficulty as to the quantity to be sent. I go to Talladega on tomorrow.
Very Respectfully,
